Is Your Business Represented at the Table? It Should Be.

I got a call from a friend who was frustrated about legislation moving through Columbia. He was concerned about how it might affect his business and wanted my take on it. The issue wasn’t one I was working on for a client, so I only had a general knowledge of it. I asked him if he was a member of his trade association because that’s usually the best first stop for insight on issues like this.

His answer? No.

That answer always surprises me, but I hear it more often than you’d think.

If you own a business, if it’s your livelihood, your passion, your investment, why wouldn’t you want to be part of a group that exists solely to protect and promote your interests? Why wouldn’t you want professionals watching the legislative and regulatory landscape for issues that could reshape your bottom line?

Government Affairs Isn’t Universal
There’s a common misconception that government affairs professionals monitor every ordinance or piece of legislation at every level of government. We don’t. We monitor what matters to the people we represent. If a bill doesn’t impact our clients, we’re probably not tracking it in detail.

Yes. We keep tabs on major issues because sometimes high-profile legislation can jam up the entire process and impact the bills we are working on, but unless you’ve got someone advocating specifically for you, there’s no guarantee your issue is on anyone’s radar.

Trade Associations: Your First Line of Defense
This is where trade associations come in. They exist to give you a collective voice. They employ government affairs teams to track relevant legislation, evaluate its impact, and engage with lawmakers to support your industry’s needs.

If you’re not a member of your trade association, you’re missing out on more than networking. You’re missing critical information, timely advocacy, and a seat at the table where decisions are made.

The cost of membership is typically a fraction of what it could cost you if legislation passes that harms your ability to do business. It’s an investment in staying ahead of the curve and protecting your livelihood.

If a Trade Association Doesn’t Exist—Create One (Or Hire an Advocate)
Not every industry has a trade group. That doesn’t mean you’re out of options.

  • Hire a Government Affairs Team: Firms like TM Public Relations & Governmental Affairs offer tailored legislative monitoring and advocacy services to businesses, nonprofits, and agencies. We make sure someone watches the issues that matter to you and works for you.
  • Start Your Own Association: If you and others in your industry don’t have collective representation, consider forming your own advocacy organization. It takes planning and commitment, but it gives your sector a focused, credible voice in government.
  • Contract for Direct Advocacy: When you need a hands-on approach, contracting with a government affairs firm gives you access to experienced professionals who can communicate directly with decision-makers on your behalf.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late
The worst time to realize you needed advocacy is after the ordinance or legislation has already passed. By then, your options are limited, and your ability to influence the outcome is gone.

Decisions are going to be made with or without your input. The question is whether your business will be represented when they are. Join your trade association. If one doesn’t exist, let’s talk about creating it, and if you want a partner to advocate for your business, we’re here to help because the smart money isn’t just watching government. It’s participating in it.
