April 20, 2015
For Google, consider April 21, 2015 “M Day.”
Why should you care?
In this case, the “M” stands for “mobile,” and if your web site isn’t mobile responsive, April 21 will change the way people find you on the web.
So, what does mobile responsive mean?
Chances are really good you’ve already seen it even if you didn’t know there was a term for it.
Mobile responsive is another term for responsive web design (RWD) which is the process used to develop websites and provides optimal experiences across devices ranging from desktops/notebooks to tablets to smart phones.
In the simplest terms, it’s what allows you to easily read, navigate, or view a site’s content no matter what device you’re using.
Why does it matter starting April 21?
The answer is simple. Google.
On February 26, Google informed web developers:
“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.”
In other words, starting April 21, Google’s new search algorithm will give preference to mobile-friendly web sites and push less responsive sites lower in search results.
The sky isn’t falling, and nonmobile-friendly sites won’t get banished in to the unsearchable deep web, but if your site doesn’t have responsive capabilities integrated in to it, it’s going to become much harder for people to find you or your site unless they know EXACTLY what they’re looking for.
